Several people wrote recently to ask about how I got to know Mexico so intimately. I’ve sent them emails telling them to watch for my column of May 24, and I’d write about it. I began studying Spanish in the 9th grade, and then had several years of Spanish in college. For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved the Spanish language. In fact, my first job was teaching high school Spanish in Gulfport, Mississippi. Today, I enjoy watching Mexican novellas and I adore the ‘La India Maria’ comedies.  >>more

This coming Sunday would have been my Grandmother Odom’s 108th birthday. She was born at the close of the 19th Century and lived to see the close of the 20th Century. I always called her ‘Mama’, so that’s how’ll I refer to her in the rest of the column. She was my hero, and the kindest, most loving person I’ve ever known. It was my great karmic fortune to have had her as part of this lifetime. She and my Papa were my saviours. Without them, I would’ve never survived my childhood.   >>more

I grew up in the 1950’s, when the middle class was at its apex. The US had won the war, and was engaged in an ideological battle with the Russians, both sides backed by enough weapons of mass destruction to blow up the whole world several times over. I was young, but as Bob Dylan once wrote, “I was so much older then”. I didn’t know a lot about the Russians, except that they were the bad guys and we Americans were the good guys.   >>more

Lots of wealthy people visit (and live in) Santa Fe. We sort of expect more from rich people, don’t we? We think that since they don’t have to worry about money like we do, that they should be happy and relaxed. It is part of our shared illusion that more money would make us happier....or, at least that if we didn’t have to worry about paying bills, we could relax and enjoy life more. I really do hate to be the one to say this, but I don’t believe that is true.   >>more

Until recently, I didn’t think too much about the future. I’ve always lived my life with a sense of adventure. If I wanted to go somewhere, or do something, I went there and did what I thought sounded like fun. And goodness, I have had some adventures. I’ve been blessed beyond anything I could’ve ever hoped for. My life has been my own personal magical mystery tour. And, I continue to lead a magical life. Lately though, I’ve started thinking some about the future.   >>more

You have the right to define who you are; you get to create your own spiritual path; and you get to decide how you need to best react in situations. I try to act with as much kindness as I can, but if people won’t let me, I take care of business in other ways. I do not believe that spiritual seekers are required to take any crap that someone decides to throw at us. We can hand that crap right back.   >>more

Two days ago, I went through the house changing all the clocks, and my wristwatch, which I seldom wear. This process is called “Daylight Savings Time”. Some people get very upset by this change, and some are confused about what “time” it really is. When we were younger, for months after the time change, my sister would ask, “What time is it in real life?”   >>more

I received many comments on a recent response to a reader who was concerned about a relative’s alcoholism. Many of us know that our community has a severe problem with alcohol related illness, accidents and deaths. I would like today’s column to be one of those you can cut out of the paper and keep for future reference.   >>more

I’m not a prophet, nor do I want to become one. But, I can read a map. I can tell you that if you stay on I-25 north, you’ll come to Pecos, then Las Vegas, Raton, and eventually Denver.  >>more
