Richardson incites blogosphere scrutiny.

“[Bill] Richardson was a guest on Don Imus’ syndicated radio program on March 29, 2006. Imus…jokingly said one of his staffers suggested Richardson was ‘not really Hispanic.’ Richardson replied in Spanish that if the staffer believes that, then he is a ‘maricon.’ The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation says the word means ‘faggot’ in Spanish.” —The Associated Press, July 12.

“My record is the strongest among the presidential candidates on gay rights issues and I’m puzzled by the timing of this. When it happened a year ago, nobody seemed to think it was terribly important. Now it surfaces…It’s probably a sign from other campaigns that they are little worried about me.” —Bill Richardson to The Associated Press, July 12.

“I still think that on LGBT issues, Richardson is among the best of all the current presidential nominees…I [just] wish he had used the ‘moment’ to raise awareness about homophobia in the community instead of giving the usual half-assed apologies that everyone has given as of late.” —Blabbeando blog, July 10.

“I’m not surprised when someone like Anne [sic] Coulter makes an obnoxious remark… that’s how she makes her living…But to hear a statement like this from a governor who happens to be running for president (and is courting our votes and money) is deeply troubling.” —Hubble Books, July 10.

“It seems to us that reviving this issue does nothing but shed light on one incident, rather than focusing on the larger story. It would be like admonishing a special ed teacher for using the word ‘retarded’ back in second-grade. It is, quite simply, idiotic.” —Queerty, July 10.

“Richardson has claimed that he thought the word meant effeminate, not the ‘f’ word, which in my opinion is a load of BS that I’m not shoveling.”—Vivar Latino, July 11.

“Richardson said that in the Spanish he grew up speaking, ‘the term means simply ‘gay,’ not positive or negative.’ Uh sure. Go Hillary!”
—Out in Hollywood, July 13.
