Although the theme of this year’s Winter Guide—Fire & Ice—takes its cue from the Robert Frost poem, the stories herein are far from apocalyptic in nature. Rather, we’ve seized upon ways to make the most of the coming season, whether you’re the type who likes to brave the elements or avoid them at all costs.
If you belong in the Ice is Nice camp, it’s time to get those ice skates out of storage and check out all the many frozen ponds available for twirling. If last year’s ski season left you cursing global warming, cheer up: This year’s forecast looks decidedly whiter. Of course, you can get chilly without exerting yourself; a picnic in winter? Yes!
For those who like to stay warm this time of year, first things first: Got fire? Great, now all you need is a rich cup of cocoa and some snuggly winter gear, and you’re all set.
Yes, winter means less daylight, but it doesn’t mean there’s less to do. Between new books, new movies and a rockin’ music and culture scene, chances are you’ll be just as busy and on the town as you were last summer. But with mittens (knit your own!).
