This restaurant started off with a bang. We loved it. I don't understand what happens to a restaurant when the food is so good and then deteriorates.
I understand they have a new chef, but i don't understand how that could impact a restaurant standard so dramatically. The service is still good and the restaurant is enchanting but the food is not how it started off being.

Simply said, "outstanding." We took our son to A La Mesa for his 16th birthday celebration. He had sweet breads as an appetizer (yes, my courageous and adventurous son) and we all partook. My date, a wine geek, was delighted with the wine list and our selection (I can't recall). The service was impressive. It was a wonderful choice for this special birthday celebration. We will be back.

Why I won’t return.

We had five in our group and things went well and the food was good. The waitress had a little trouble de-corking the wine but, hey, it happens. Also one person in our group ordered steak but got the wrong order. It was good but the wrong one. But the thing that will keep me from returning is that the restaurant automatically added a 20% tip. I’ve often seen restaurants note that “for parties of ten or more” (larger parties) they’d add, say, a 15-18% tip, but there were only five of us and I resent the fact that I don’t have a say in the amount of tip I leave. I saw nothing stating that all parties will pay a 20% tip. I find this presumptuous and there are too many wonderful restaurants in Santa Fe to have to return to A La Mesa.

We just had a Valentine's day dinner at A la Mesa that was just outstanding. We frequent this restaurant quite often since they have opened always continually impressed with how well they are doing out of the gates but even we were overwhelmed by the beauty and execution on this particular evening. The chef came to our table after we asked to thank him, he was so young and cute. Clearly when he speaks you hear his passion for food. We are forever fans now of this restaurant and of young chef Jacob Hilbert.

And how! This place is awesome and not over the top and not underwhelming. Chef Jacob Hilbert and his team are going to go places.

We had a wonderful experience there. The food and service were great! The deserts prepared by their new and talented young Pastry Chef, Christina Hunt were beautiful and delicious. Watch out, Santa Fe, a great new eatery has arrived!

I don't know what sort of experience you had there to get you so upset but i and nearly everyone i know find A la mesa to be one of the best restaurants in Santa Fe. I have been there multiple times and find the owners to be kind and genial.
They have gotten nearly spotless reviews and their young chef is quite talented, try the rabbit, the waterzooi and the tuna.
Do not be led astray by someone's sour grapes or unusually bad experience.

We had a wonderful time and the food was amazing. Service was spot on. I highly recomend A la Mesa to all. Enjoy!

We had a terrible meal here, our first and last. The new owners (who were too busy schmoozing to bother watching whether their newly-opened restaurant was running on all cylinders) issued a hostile and insincere apology -- how dare we have a bad meal at their wonderful new restaurant? Anyway, the place is a joke. Our nickname for the place is "A La Boca" -- go to La Boca, a wonderful restaurant, instead -- or "A La Salida," loosely translated, "head to the exit!!!" Hopefully the Cafe San Estevan, another fine eatery which was booted out of this location to make room for this place -- will reopen soon. Skip It!
