We just ate there recently. Steak-Frites among the best I've had, and I've lived in France. The pork two ways (Dos Puercos) was unbelievable. Corn soup was good; clean, simple, charred, very nice. Creme brulee? Well...the creme itself was wonderful, but the sugar on top was not brulee(d), they need to hand-torch that sucker until it's at least brown, rather than just a loose dusting of thick brown sugar (turbinado, it appeared to be). Otherwise, fantastic meal, great service, great ambiance.
My problem with A La Mesa is that it would seem that their concept of 'a reservation' is much like the rental car clerk in the classic Seinfeld episode. If I show up for my 8:00 reservation I think that it is ridiculous to be told that my table would be ready in 30 minutes. I've been in the restaurant business and I realize that there are lingerers and you plan as best you can for that. Being asked to wait a few minutes is acceptable, 30 is not.
I found it a boring menu, very mediocre service and a lackluster decor. The decor reminds me of trying to hard to be a classy 90's restaurant. I so wish for Cafe San Estevan to be back.
I will not go back to A la Mesa with so many other choices in Santa Fe.
