About San Marcos Café

Leafing through an old yearbook, I'm struck by the chilling recurrence of the autographed sentiment, "You're great- don't ever change," and its relevance to how people feel about the San Marcos Café.

The combination of a bustling Midwestern farm, a charming New England cottage and a menu full of New Mexican dishes, the San Marcos Café may be considered the human-food department of the adjacent San Marcos Feed store. Walking into the low-slung building, turkeys and peacocks strut across your path. Inside, tables are outfitted with mismatched sugar bowls and checked napkins, and every other person walking in is called by name.

A meal is best started with one of the Café's huge, flaky cinnamon rolls, coupled with a stoneware mug of piping-hot coffee. The menu is always accompanied by tons of specials with extra touches; the huevos rancheros are made even better with blue corn tortillas. The homemade bread, topped with herb butter, is good on its own, but is best employed to mop up runny eggs and red chile. For a more European start to the day, try the cheese blintzes or homemade French toast and some French coffee-espresso poured over sweetened condensed milk.

The food is good enough to warrant regular return trips. Repeat the practice enough and you too could be called by name each time you swing open the screen door. (Charlotte Jusinski)
