Fay Ku: Double Entendre

A mermaid dons a skeletal crown, women bed down with fish and children glance surreptitiously over shoulders as they do precisely what their parents told them not to. The figures in Fay Ku’s drawings demonstrate that the ridiculous restraints that bind our sexual urges lead to hilarious, if disconcerting, appetites—in this case, bestial couplings of the piscine and avian persuasion. Images from classic myths and fairy tales are mixed with moments of id-driven sensuousness and human obstinacy. Ku’s humor and candor is as politically topical as it is personal, inspired by what the artist describes as negative “residues” of tender, if embarrassing, events in her lifetime. Ku’s sparse, outspoken and vulnerable graphite and ink drawings are elegant and seductively patterned. She mingles the negative space of Japanese woodblock printing with an acute draftsmanship drawn from Western art’s classical figure studies. The Brooklyn-based artist is fresh from exhibitions in Paris, London and, most recently, SoHo for the Tenri Cultural Institute’s SHE: Feminine Visions by Taiwanese-American Artists.
