North Mississippi Allstars and Hill Country Revue
With its roots securely grounded in old-time blues and traditional country, North Mississippi Allstars formed in 1996, during a period when heavy hitters such as RL Burnside, Junior Kimbrough and Otha Turner dominated the modern country-blues scene.
Multi-instrumentalists Luther Dickinson, Cody Dickinson and Chris Chew’s insatiable urge to pick, pluck and strum their way into reputable music careers quickly catapulted them to international recognition. After several successful releases, including 2000’s Grammy-nominated Shake Hands With Shorty, the boys continue to emanate endless amounts of fresh material with a sound comparable to groups such as Widespread Panic, G Love and Special Sauce or The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion.
The hum of banjos, mandolins, guitars, keys and electric washboards permeates the air as the trio delivers gritty country blues in a way that preserves the music’s authenticity but still allows for plenty of experimentation. Cody Dickinson’s side project, Hill Country Revue, dishes up some savory strings to kick things off. (Kyle Eustice)
