“Each dance is a poem, a wordless physical poem that is realized and delivered through my body,” Julie Brette Adams tells SFR. And like poetry, dance is difficult to define and almost impossible to explain. Nevertheless, the valiant effort to describe dance continues with Adams’ own words about Open Heart Dancing, her solo contemporary dance concert. Adams’ method is not conceptual or abstract, modes she sees as “a reflection of our culture’s emphasis on technology, instant gratification, the external,” but rather her dance is “a journey inward.” Her performances investigate pathos, grieving, loss and humor. The humor comes in starkly and unexpectedly. For example, in “Opus No. 28 for Socks,” Adams, clad in a black raincoat, maintains neutrality above the knee while her feet in white athletic socks chatter away. This combination of skills (Adams’ training runs the gamut from jazz to modern) and music (ranging from an a cappella version of the Beatles’ “Because” to an electric cello solo) creates emotional impact and transformation through deep analysis and experimentation with gesture, nonverbal expression and mood.
