Santa Fe Symphony's Viennese New Year
In its first concert of the year, the always-solid Santa Fe Symphony Orchestra and Chorus presents “Viennese New Year’s,” a celebration of songs from the classical music center of the world. Offering work by two Strausses—Johann and Richard—and Emmerich Kalman, the musical tour of Austria’s capital city is capped by the addition of the symphony’s special guest, mezzo-soprano Kirsten Lear. The singer, a New Mexico native who currently lives in Santa Fe, has traveled the world, singing opera in places as different from one another as Canada and Egypt. For this performance, which includes Johann Strauss’ “Blue Danube,” “Wine, Women and Song” and “Thunder and Lightning Polka,” as well as Kalman’s “Countess Maritza Overture” and Richard Strauss’ “Der Rosenkavalier Suite,” Lear and the symphony bring the beauty of Vienna to life.
