Sweat 2011

Work It, Santa Fe

It’s not Jan. 1, but prepare to make resolutions. New Mexico, along with the rest of the nation, is stunningly unhealthy: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than one-quarter of New Mexicans are obese. Add residents who are overweight, and you’re looking at more than 60 percent of the state’s population.

But fear not! Beyond delving into the reasons behind the obesity epidemic (Fit or Fat?), this edition of Sweat, SFR’s annual fitness guide, offers a wealth of options for getting in shape.

If you’re so in touch with your inner kid that you spend most of the workday yearning for recess, check out the ad hoc kickball league at Patrick Smith Park (Kick Start). If you’re more of a sports-for-grownups fan, learn stateside favorites (basketball, swimming) at Santa Fe Community College (School of Jocks) or head south to hone your begging skills at a quintessentially British cricket match (Of Wickets, Sixers and Cultural Chasms).

But perhaps your Type A disposition requires all of the facts before you even consider exercising. If so, peruse SFR’s yoga directory and gym grid.

Reward-driven? Grab a can of Natural Light and set out on a backwoods, wild-goose-chase hash run (page 25) or pursue the elusive promise of predawn enlightenment with Ashtanga yoga (Dawn Patrol).

And if the mere idea of making time to exercise just stresses you out, see our more relaxing options—recommended by doctor of Oriental medicine George Mandel and the ever-knowledgeable staffers at Ten Thousand Waves and Herbs, Etc. (Stress On, Stress Off).

It’s time to get in shape, Santa Fe. But that’s no reason not to have a raucously good time.
