Last year, I had a house party for Paddy Jones. Paddy is the last student of Padraig O'Keeffe, and one of the last pure Sliabh Luachra musicians alive (JFGI). He was friends with Denis Murphy and Julia Clifford. He walked to O'Keeffe's home, three hours round trip, every Sunday when he was a boy. Paddy is profiled in Rus Bradburd's Paddy on the Hardwood
, a memoir of fiddling and basketball set in Ireland. My house exploded with fans, fiddle freaks, kids and folks lugging all kinds of string instruments. This year they need a bigger venue:
Friday, April 2
1125 Cerrillos Rd.
(North side of Cerrillos, west of school for the Deaf)Prices: $10, $7 for students and $5 kids under 12.
You won't want to miss it. Kind of music that makes you want to sing, weep, and drink.
