A debate broke out between members of the Santa Fe Public Schools Board of Education at its meeting last night over the idea to investigate a misleading report on student achievement used earlier this year to evaluate the district superintendent. Click through for video!
Board member Steven Carrillo went head to head with member Frank Montaño, who served on the previous board that approved Superintendent Bobbie Gutierrez' contract extension in February. As SFR previously reported, controversy has erupted around a report used in her evaluation which was later revealed to present a misleadingly rosy picture of student achievement.
Good for you, Steve Carrillo, for not allowing some board members to "let this issue go". It was appalling to see Montano chastising you during last night's meeting for your interest in finding out why false data was presented to the public and how to prevent it from happening again. What was particularly interesting to me was Montano's opinion that, if no law has been broken, then no investigation into this blatant breach of public trust is needed. Such a low bar to set for the people charged with educating our children!
I second that, Jay. I hope that everyone will contact board member Carrillo and thank him for following through on this. Thanks to Julie Murray for standing up and speaking the truth last night. And I hope that everyone will contact school board members and let them know that we find Gutierrez's falsification of student achievement numbers in order to justify her contract extension an egregious breach of public trust, to say the least.
Another slice and dice by the reporter. This reporter seems hell bent on the sensational rather than the whole story. Just play the segment in it's entirety, or at least provide the public with a link to the entire video. This paper is rolling downhill into the realm of tabloid journalism.
Bring back Zane and the old Editor. I'm done with this fluff on yoga retreats and visits to goodwill, and this particular reporter who seems better suited to the News of the World.
blah...
@ again...
You obviously have never attended a SF Public School Board meeting and have no idea what a huge mess this is so please inform yourself before diluting this important story.
They vote Bobby in for two more years on a lame-duck session and then fudge the numbers and Frank has the nerve to ask "what would this investigation serve?" I can't imagine what they (not including newly elected school board members) do behind closed doors. Kate, is this something that needs to be reported to Hanna Skandera the NMDPE?
I sat through three hours of the meeting last night. I watched the meeting in its entirety on the SFPS website. The selected clips represent fairly how it went, though the Reporter chose not to include the more caustic comments I and others made about the superintendent (darn..).
The Reporter is eating the NewMexican's lunch on school issue stories. Why the New Mexican has abdicated its role as a community voice has everyone scratching their heads. But thank God for Wren Abbot's reporting on these issues. Keep up the good work, SF Reporter!
