When he heard the news that his burning had, for the second year in a row, been voted the best community event in Santa Fe, Zozobra reacted as expected: He groaned. Loudly. But Ray Valdez, event producer and Zozobra builder, was decidedly more enthusiastic—and articulate. “It’s a great feeling and honor to be chosen by the public this way,” Valdez says, adding that Will Shuster’s Zozobra is not just “one of the more beloved Santa Fe events that families can attend,” it also raises money for the community; proceeds from Will Shuster’s Zozobra are a fundraiser for Kiwanis Club of Santa Fe and are used for programs for local children and youth. As for the event, this year marks Zozobra’s 84th anniversary and it will showcase the bands Lumbre de Sol with Sol Fire and Mariachi Buenaventura. And, of course, if you’ve got gloom you want to burn, SFR is the official custodian of the gloom box; we’ll be collecting those sad thoughts to be stuffed into Old Man Gloom before he goes up in smoke.
