Shidoni is a joy to discover on an aimless summer drive through Tesuque. The land surrounding it is stunning and Shidoni’s own expansive grounds are stocked with varied outdoor sculptures and surprising visual wonders through which visitors inevitably wander. An indoor gallery handles smaller and more delicate works.
Founded in 1971, Shidoni is the oldest gallery under continuous ownership in the Santa Fe area. “We’re not just an art community,” Shidoni President Scott Hicks says. “We’re a community community. We don’t have to put out picnic tables around the area, but we do so that people can just come out and enjoy the fields and experience the whole thing that is Shidoni, rather than being charged an admission or made to feel unwelcome unless they’re ready to buy something. We just want people to be welcome to come out here and enjoy what we have to offer.”
More large-scale, contemporary work is slated for production at the Shidoni bronze foundry in the future. According to Hicks, that means going back to the organization’s roots.
