For 13 years, mother-daughter team Dorothy Massey and Mary Wolf have co-owned the now 31-year-old bookstore on W. San Francisco Street—only, it’s not there anymore. Collected Works’ new digs on the corner of Galisteo and Water streets allows for more breathing room for the bookstore’s many literary events, which have included readings by locals such as Judith Ryan Hendricks as well as national writers like David Sedaris. “We really wanted to add another element to the bookstore after 31 years,” Wolf says of the big move (which, Wolf says proudly, was done entirely by hand, without using an ounce of gasoline).
With an added coffee shop, expanded inventory and room for more than 200 seats for literary events, the new location is a huge step up from the snug quarters on W. San Francisco Street. Wolf hopes the new Galisteo location will provide a more comfortable gathering spot for book lovers and beyond—there will be room for book clubs, a cozy fireplace for the winter and soon live music will fill the air. “Virginia Woolf said that everyone should have a clean, well-lighted place for books,” Wolf says. “That’s what we hope to provide.”
