Santa Fe Bandstand, produced by the nonprofit group Outside In, enters its seventh year of bringing music to the Plaza. What’s the series’ biggest accomplishment in those seven years? According to David Lescht, director of Outside In, it’s that Santa Fe Bandstand hasn’t just brought music back to the Plaza, it’s brought back the locals as well.
“There used to not be many [Santa Feans] there,” Lescht says. “They come out in full force now.” Local talent also takes center stage at the Plaza; Lescht says of the 89 performances scheduled for this year’s Bandstand, 77 feature Santa Fe talent. As for the music itself, everything from zydeco swing, ragtime, salsa, world, R&B and rockabilly are well-represented. The Bandstand series is just one project for this nonprofit: Outside In sees music as a healing force, and brings performances and workshops to nursing homes, shelters, and treatment and correctional facilities where such opportunities are not often found.
The slogan for this year’s series is “The world needs music”—come out to the Plaza and prove the slogan true by dancing yourself silly with Santa Fe Bandstand all summer long. (Alex Roberts)
