The complex of significant museums located on Museum Hill is anchored by the 55-year-old Museum of International Folk Art, part of New Mexico’s state-sponsored museum system and home to the world’s largest collections of folk art.
According to Museum Director Dr. Joyce Ice, MOIFA’s goal is “to offer people who come here a quality museum experience that’s welcoming, that’s nurturing, that’s interesting, that revives the spirit.” Ice says the museum aims to demonstrate that art is a way to stimulate the intellect and transform people’s lives. The ethos is an experience with art that encourages creativity as a response. “Our founder’s words over the entry door are ‘the art of the craftsman is a bond between the peoples of the world,’” Ice says.
MOIFA also hosts Santa Fe’s annual international Folk Art Market, the most significant such event in the world. On exhibition for the summer and fall of 2008 is A Chair for All Reasons, featuring chairs, benches and stools from around the world. Starting in spring, 2009, MOIFA will present Wayang Kulit, an exhibition of Indonesian shadow puppetry, complete with live Indonesian puppet masters and Gamelan music.
