This new-fangled Wi-Fi thing is great, but it’s not the only thing that keeps people schlepping their laptops to Santa Fe Baking Company. SFBC, famous for its legendary breakfast burritos, delivers an expansive sensory experience: The mingling smells of coffee and chile and the hustle-bustle of customers and employees alike create a cheery, relaxed space, making it the best place in Santa Fe to lol with your Dell on SFBC’s easily accessible wireless network. Eric Struck, owner since 1998, installed Wi-Fi three years ago because he “knew it was a cool thing going around.” SFBC’s commitment to wireless is put to good use: People chug away at their laptops while munching on snacks, and someone is always using the desktop provided by the restaurant. “I think people like to work here because we kinda let people hang out with their computers…We don’t make them pay for food or leave,” Struck says. “A lot of things should be free but aren’t. Internet should be free because it’s a tool everyone can use. It’s cheap for me to buy [for SFBC] and then other people get it for free.” When asked about winning, Struck smiles. “It’s nice to know what people are thinking,” he says. “The main thing is community support. I support the community, and this shows that they support me too.” (EP)
