Santa Fe Greenhouses is in the business of alchemy—not exactly turning iron into gold, but something often just as hard: turning the high desert into a garden oasis, a sustainable and minimal-water using oasis. To offer suitable plants, according to Vice President of Marketing Ava Salman, SFG "work[s] with plant hunters who go all over the West and around the world to find plants that do well in the West."
The knowledgeable staff full of "horticulturists, arborists and master gardeners" plays the part at home: "We do a lot of breeding at the nursery, where we cross plants as well as select for the best of a variety." This distinct equation of factors has brought SFG many accolades, including a 2008 American Horticultural Society Great American Gardeners Award for SFG founder and horticulturist David Salman.
The equation also adds up to sustainable and beautiful landscaping in our harsh climate. "The key thing with our precious water is to start out with the healthiest, most suitable plants. You'll use a lot less money and water in the long run," Ava says.
