Last month, rob and charlie’s turned 30, but it continues to do what it’s done for generations of Santa Feans: accommodate everyone and all their needs. “What we’re trying to do is get as many people riding bicycling as possible,” manager and bicycling enthusiast Stephen Newhall says. “It doesn’t matter what kind of bikes they are on, as long as they’re out there and not driving.”
Newhall isn’t just spurting axioms; he bikes to work each day (even when he lived in Eldorado) and has managed to live 25 years without a car. To get everyone biking isn’t easy, but it does involve rob and charlie’s broad approach. From BMX bikes to tools to tubes, “we stock all types of bikes and we service everything,” Newhall says.
But as is evidenced by several employees’ involvement in Chainbreaker Collective, Santa Fe’s bike co-op, the mantra of rob and charlie’s is customers not only buy bikes, but build them; they not only come in to get their bikes fixed, but to learn how to fix what’s broken.
