After two and a half years as a Santa Fe music scene staple, nightclub Corazón has closed. Its owners announced Friday, June 24 via Facebook that the multiple Best Of Santa Fe readers' poll winner would close its doors the following day.---
Part owner Catherine Davis tells SFR the venue is closing for "multi-tiered" reasons, including an exhausting, "very ambitious" booking schedule, the recession and local tax debt that threatened the club's liquor license.
"There doesn't seem any support in the city to pay it off over time," Davis says, adding that Corazón is current with this year's taxes.
Davis also cited underfunding as a reason Corazón was not able to continue its restaurant portion, which she says would have made the business more profitable.
"Santa Fe is not a big enough market for just live music," Davis says.
The "heart of Santa Fe" has hosted sundry events ranging from indie-superstars
to members of the
to salsa dancing to DJ nights, in addition to various fundraisers, including one last night for
bike cooperative .
The venue's final event was a Pride party, Born This Way, which included a Lady Gaga lookalike contest.
