The Art of Fashion isn't the only couture-focused event this week. Totally unrelated but totally in the same vein,
Buffalo Thunder Resort and Casino
hosts the Thunder Run Fashion show this Saturday.
Thunder Magazine, Fashion!, a publication of the Buffalo Thunder Resort and Casino, celebrates its second edition with a show of cutting edge Native American fashions from designers Michelle Tapia Browning, Patricia Michaels (that's a dress of her design to the right), Penny Singer, Pilar Agoyo and Jerry Ingram. The designs, blends of traditional regalia and functional, day-to-day garb, are part of the recent trend of Native designs that have cropped up on runways in London, New York, Paris and Milan.
But fashion is only one venue for these designers' talents. Tapia Browning made waves recently with her large glass playing cards that replaced European with Puebloan royalty; Michaels' feathery threads are influenced by her with textile and rug work; while echoes of Singers' leather and bead designs are evident in her elaborate vests and trousers. The event, while free to the public, also features a $10 raffle; the whole night is a benefit for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Santa Fe, Chama, Abiquiu and Pojoaque and highlights extraordinary contemporary fashion with a potent kick of Native talent and flair.
Word recently got out that while most of the show is contemporary clothing, Ingram has fashioned a traditional Cherokee Elder outfit, and in the fashion show it will be modeled by Santa Fe's own famed
.
As an aside, anyone who hasn't been up to Buffalo Thunder yet should absolutely make the trip. The resort not only is brand-new and beautiful, but its art collection is second to none.
