This quiet restaurant across from the Santuario de Guadalupe church serves reasonably priced traditional New Mexican food in a beautifully decorated adobe with a very pretty front patio. The café
has a reputation for its great brunch and it is definitely a popular spot on Sunday mornings. Sitting in the front room or out on the flower-filled patio, you can watch as the colorfully garbed priest stands in the church's entryway, shaking hands with the men in cowboy hats, women in Sunday dresses and bleary-eyed kids showing up for services. Stay long enough and some of them will join you for brunch. Aside from the familiar huevos rancheros, eggs benedict, enchiladas and omelets, Café San Estevan also offers a few rarer offerings, like Hopi atole. Made from roasted ground blue corn, atole can be served as a thick drink or a thin porridge. Here it is a sweet, creamy soup that is as comforting and satisfying as long-cooked oatmeal or Southern grits. At dinner, try the steaks or anything that comes with their sweet, hot red chile.
