Las Cruces diocese reports abusers
The Catholic Church's Diocese of Las Cruces released a list of 28 diocesan officials it said had been credibly accused of sexually abusing and assaulting minors. The church also sent the list to New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas, who began an investigation into the church after a successful lawsuit by a counterpart in Pennsylvania.
The mis-call
If you follow pollster Brian Sanderoff, you know he's not wrong a whole lot. Like, he remembers a local race one night 20 years ago when he missed a call. Tuesday night, just before KOAT-TV handed off its coverage to ABC's national crew for overnight election tracking, he said he'd seen enough votes come in that he felt comofortable projecting Yvette Herrell would win. Of course, she didn't. Sanderoff tells SFR he wasn't aware that so many absentee ballots were still uncounted—and all of them were unreported—in Doña Ana County.
Washout
Summer storms washed away the hundreds of cottonwood saplings planted along the Santa Fe River, and replacing them could be costly ($). If they survive, full-grown trees will provide a beautiful parkway and erosion control, but estimates to Santa Fe County range to more than $600,000 to replace them.
Brave
A Los Angeles woman who moved to Albuquerque to become an actress has put her face to allegations of kidnapping and sexual assault against Timothy Bachicha. In this morning's Albuquerque Journal, Elise Kaplan speaks to the woman, who says Bachicha threw her in his van, assaulted her and choked her until she lost consciousness. Six women have come forward since June 2017 to accused Bachicha of similar crimes.
First(s)
Doña Ana County's new sheriff is the first woman to hold the job, which has existed since 1854. Kim Stewart is also New Mexico's first openly gay sheriff. She spoke candidly with Blake Gumprecht ($) at the Las Cruces Sun-News about her firsts.
Moving
Honeywell is moving the jobs at its Albuquerque plant to Arizona, Florida and Puerto Rico, the company has announced. This one hurts: Up to 500 jobs in aerospace engineering and manufacturing could be affected.
Still moving
If dance movement is your thing, Boxcar has Friday night plans. DJ Rashaan Ahmad spins hip-hop(ish) beats tonight starting at 10 pm. It'll probably cost you a coke or some jalapeño poppers or something.
Keep moving
Because it's going to be chilly this weekend, with temperatures 10-20 degrees below normal. Expect clouds at times. There's not a huge threat of precipitation, but it's a possibility in parts of the state.
