Santa Fe's local radio station KSFR announced today that despite a new court ruling that could make it possible to air political ads on public radio, it will never adopt such a practice.---
The US Court of Appeals in San Francisco, Calif., ruled yesterday that a law restricting political ads from airing on public TV or radio is unconstitutional. A California public TV station had sued the Federal Communications Commission, arguing that restriction violated the First Amendment right to free speech. The station, Minority Television Project, argued that the law was unconstitutional because it restricted programming on the basis of content.
In a press release, KSFR declared its board and staff "alarmed" at the Court's decision in favor of Minority TV.
"We pledge to resist any effort or pressure that conceivably could force us to open our airwaves to attack ads and other political messages," KSFR General Manager Linda Highhill wrote.
