Gov. Bill Richardson’s office declared May 17 “Dennis Hopper Day,” in honor of the Taos-based actor who made his name on two wheels. But that Monday held a different significance for thousands of non-motorized bikers: It was the first day of Bike To Work Week.
The annual weeklong alt-commuter celebration also got a shout-out from Richardson’s office. Spokeswoman Caitlin Kelleher did not respond to an email asking if the governor would bike to work at all this week, although

helpfully pointed out that the Roundhouse is downhill from the Governor’s Mansion.
Perhaps the most compelling event falls on Saturday, May 22, when Second Street Brewery will offer 10 percent discounts to cyclists in the “community” group ride. The ride departs the bar at 10:30 am, loops along the adjacent trail and returns to the brewery approximately one hour later. Lest that be read as an encouragement of drunken cycling—still technically punishable as DWI—the discount applies only to post-ride brewskis.
