If there is anything definitive that can be said about
owner Suhana Gibson, it is that she is passionate. Whether she's discussing the whimsical works in her gallery or telling stories of stray animals she has rescued, there is always energy and drive behind each word.
This drive has brought her to the organization of
, a fundraiser to take place on July 19 at Milagro 139 (139 W. San Francisco St., 995-0139). The premise of the event is simple: Ceramic pet bowls painted by artists and celebrities from around the world are to be auctioned off to benefit the
Heart and Soul Animal Sanctuary
. But the simplicity ends there.
Below the jump is more about the event, plus a sneak peek at some of the fine art dog bowls to be auctioned off.
Gibson enlisted as many friends and neighbors as she could to create an evening full of entertainment and goodwill. To ensure that the bowls actually got painted, she actually packaged them up and sent them to celebrities around the country and the world with a note explaining her intention (she didn't want to risk her request getting lost in the shuffle, and besides - if you're asked to paint a bowl, and the bowl just arrives, it's much easier to just go for it).
The evening will feature music from Michael Kott and the Gordon Free Band, a fashion show (dogs included!) from Emilia Poochie and the opportunity to later bid on the clothes, a viewing of a film created about the animal sanctuary and much more.
The biggest development in the organization of the Empty Bowl was the appearance of a benefactor who donated money to cover the use of Milagro 139 for the evening - which brings ticket prices drastically down. Originally at $125, they're now only $65, making the evening considerably more affordable for as many Santa Feans as possible.

Many of the artists and celebrities featured - both those whose work is displayed above and other artists listed on the
- sell works for thousands of dollars in a regular gallery setting. The chance to not only get a piece at auction, but to have that piece be a dog bowl painted for charity, is a unique opportunity to own a one-of-a-kind piece of fine art that also benefits a good cause.
