Bunnies will be the beneficiaries of a charity garage sale next month in Albuquerque.
The New Mexico House Rabbit Society, which rescues and re-homes rabbits and educates the public about rabbit care and welfare, plans to hawk an array of items including camping equipment and electronics Sept. 23 and 24, 8 am to 4 pm, at 7104 Osuna Rd NE.
According to a press release, the all-volunteer nonprofit will spend 100 percent of proceeds on rabbit rescue, "including medical bills for foster rabbits."
According to Rabbit Tracks , the Society's newsletter, the group has been an official chapter of the national House Rabbit Society for about a year, but volunteers have been rescuing rabbits such as Boots and Bandit for over four years.
The national chapter began in Alameda, Calif., in 1986, when a lagomorph-loving couple found out about four bunnies at a nearby animal shelter whose days were numbered. As the House Rabbit Society website recounts it, HRS co-founder Bob Harriman turned to his wife and said, "We've got to help those rabbits."
As support for the cause grew, HRS opened the first all-rabbit shelter, in Oakland, California. New Mexico House Rabbit Society assists Albuquerque Animal Care with its rabbit program.
