MORRISSEY
"You Have Killed Me"
It's everything you want it to be: the Moz decked out in white suit (almost but not quite hiding his middle-age paunch-he's human after all!), black shirt, no tie, as he melodramatically (natch) lip-synchs his new single. The video's premise is Morrissey performing on some '70s South American awards show, replete with washed-out colors, cheesy MC and bad tuxedos. But we all know the real premise is Morrissey's layers of irony and genuineness. It'll take several watchings to figure out where he's coming from, but the song's so feyly endearing, it doesn't matter.
FLAMING LIPS
"The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song"
This Wayne Coyne/Bradley Beesley piece starts with three Asian sirens taping McDonald's hamburgers to a man who looks to be some type of office worker, and the viewer wonders if there's a point. There is, and we won't give it away: Suffice it to say, amidst the intentional goofiness and imagery-like Coyne sporting his trademark white suit, only this time slathered in raw meat, and a guy in a hyena outfit-there is actually, if you take the visuals along with the lyrics, a political message. The video is less weird than the Lips often can be, but it is very
them
-euphorically fun, sophomoric and sweet.
PINK
"Stupid Girls"
Subtle it's not, but when has Pink ever gone down the understated road? The video tears the likes of Paris Hilton and rap video hoochie mamas (and the culture that supports them) a new one, as Pink inhabits a number of stupid girl personalities, getting a new spray-on tan, undergoing breast enhancement surgery and shaking her thang next to a fake 50 Cent. Though hilarious, the video's acerbic tone (most notable when Pink's Valley Girl character groans "I will be skinnnnny!!!" after inducing her own vomit attack with a toothbrush), it's clear Pink is pissed, in the most entertaining-and engaging-of ways.
