“Tabloid Sores (Nosaj Thing Remix)”
By Health
Health//Disco
In its unremixed version, “Tabloid Sores” sounds nothing like a dance tune. But add some dirty beats, and the cacophony and Cookie Monster screams become a disjointed club banger. The already-synthesized vocals from the original lose their lyrical meaning as they are cut on top of one another and become part of the beat. The angst and aggression of the original turns into a sly groove, though somehow, despite the slowing down of everything, the intensity never leaves. It merely shifts from pure black to black light.
“Tract for Valerie Solanas”
By Matmos
The Rose Has Teeth in the Mouth of the Beast
Hey ladies, tired of the boys tossing on some sexed-up track “for all my girls out there”? Matmos has you covered with this mixed-up reinvention of the words of Valerie Solanas, a feminist who advocated for an all-female society. The track starts out slow with a solid beat set to the words of Solanas’ SCUM Manifesto before it builds to a steady grind only to halt with the weirdest few seconds of sampling (cow flatulence, seriously) that brings things to a halt in the middle before it returns to a beat so sexy even the boys in the room can get low. It’s not exactly danceable, but it sure does make it hard to sit still.
“Aly, Walk With Me (Nic Endo remix)”
The Raveonettes REMIXED
Replace The Raveonettes’ signature drone with a house beat and suddenly what’s left is more Ladytron than The Jesus and Mary Chain. This remix comes courtesy of Atari Teenage Riot’s Nic Endo, who tosses in a touch of industrial influence for some flair in this straight-ahead club-ready track. The mixture of Endo and The Raveonettes, both known for their appreciation of noise, makes for a surprisingly coherent sound.
