Killed passing through
Richard Milan and his wife stopped to stay in Santa Fe on their way from California to Kalamazoo. Someone shot the 64-year-old Michigan man in the leg, police say, as he walked his dog along a busy stretch of Airport Road. Milan died at Christus St. Vincent and police haven't made any arrests in what is the city's fifth homicide this year ($) and second in a week. Police say 5-year-old Jayden Curtis was strangled by his stepmother.
Third try at Tai Chan
The district attorney in Las Cruces will try former Santa Fe County Sheriff's Deputy Tai Chan in the shooting death of his partner, Jeremy Martin. It's the third time the case will go to trial, and fourth time overall that prosecutors have sought to convict Chan, who shot Martin in the back as the pair returned from a prisoner transport. This time, DA Mark D'Antonio says, he'll pursue a voluntary manslaughter charge instead of murder.
Heinrich goes after opponents on Kavanaugh
US Sen. Martin Heinrich says he's "disgusted" by commments from Republican Mick Rich that voiced support for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and challenged the senator to explain to high school kids that if they make a mistake, they have no future. Rich says Heinrich is taking his comments out of context. Gary Johnson, the Libertarian challenger, has backed away from his support for Kavanaugh, saying he wanted to hear Thursday's testimony and decide after that.
We’ll always have Orange County
Alaska Airlines is cutting its flights from the Sunport to the Los Angeles area next year, as well as non-stop service to the Bay Area. The airline started its flights to John Wayne Airport in Orange County and San Francisco Internatinoal Airport about a year ago. It plans to continue flights to Seattle, Portland and San Diego.
The outsiders
Santa Fe's arts scene is changing. Not necessarily migrating away from Canyon Road, but expanding beyond it, as a rotating lineup of young artists are practicing do-it-yourself galleries and exhibitions as a way to foster growth and take chances. SFR digs in this week, as Culture Editor Alex De Vore examines how the ragtag community found success.
More trouble for Youngblood
The attorney general has filed an ethics complaint with the Legislature over state Rep. Monica Youngblood's behavior when she drove drunk earlier this year and was stopped by police at a checkpoint. The Albuquerque Republican was seen on body camera video multiple times touting her work in the Legislature in support of police. The attorney general's office says Youngblood broke the state's Governmental Conduct Act.
Some of your beeswax
We're waxing patriotic tonight, as the Museum of Encaustic Art opens its Melting Pot/Melting Point exhibit featuring various artists reflecting on the complexities of American culture. You have until Oct. 21 to go, but openings are fun and free—5-8 pm.
Perf
Yesterday was darn near perfect in Santa Fe, and there's more of the same in the weekend forecast. Whatever you do, do it outside. Expect highs near 80 and mostly clear skies until a chance of rain from Hurricane Rosa rolls into the state on Monday. Albuquerque and Las Cruces look to be beautifully warm, too, both around 90.
