Yowza! Warning: This is not the place to bring your dear friends from Minnesota for their introduction to green chile. It's a bit of a shame because the way-out-west truck-stop coffee-shop motif in this diner is a treat. But the bigger treat is green chile that's hotter than fresh asphalt…and a hell of a lot tastier. We've heard a few people say they think the chile isn't as hot since the Haven moved into new digs a few years back; others say the chile is hotter than it's ever been. We're too busy blowing our noses and chugging chocolate milk to listen to a word they're saying. The green chile here comes two ways: regular and level two. The way our waitress put it last time, "The regular is kinda hot, but level two is like 10 times hotter than that." A breakfast burrito merely kissed with a sheen of green sends steam out our ears. But oh, what a burrito! Planks of bacon, man,
planks
of the stuff, surrounded by pillowy folds of egg. There are no potatoes inside Horseman's burrito; the crispy, appropriately greasy potato logs they call home fries come on the side, where they mingle deliciously with the chile. If you're not at Horseman's for an early-morning hangover helper, you can get their famous chile ladled over enchiladas, quesadillas and roast beef burritos. Don't worry, it's all good when you're in the hands of the Haven.
