The literal and figurative spine of Santa Fe, the roadway that's pinned at one end in downtown and shoots straight through the city until it's known as state Hwy. 14, mispronounced by Siri and many a visitor— locals all have their own strategy for negotiating Cerrillos Road. Neighborhoods with their own identities branch away from its sturdy trunk: Baca Street, Maez Road, St. Mike's, Siler, then Airport and Rodeo. It used to be that as you get further away from the historic core, there was less and less to see and do. Not so, as Cerrillos is almost a nonstop stream of stuff clear to the city limits. It's where you find almost all of Santa Fe's national brand chains, but also where lots of small businesses take advantage of prime-time storefronts.
