The New Mexico Independent, an online news organization that had been in operation for three and a half years, officially shut down today.
---
The move was announced in a post to readers today from David Bennahum, CEO of the American Independent News Network, NM Independent's parent company.
During its tenure, the website won a number of honors, including the ACLU-New Mexico's First Amendment Award last fall. Among the local reporters who did time at the Independent are SFR alums Gwyneth Doland and David Alire Garcia, the Santa Fe New Mexican's Trip Jennings, NMPolitics.net's Heath Haussamen and Clearly New Mexico's Matthew Reichbach.
AINN also shut down sister websites in Minnesota and Michigan today.
Bennahum's post:
I am writing today to announce the closure of the New Mexico Independent. After three and a half years of operation in New Mexico, the board of the American Independent News Network, has decided to shift publication of its news into a single site, The American Independent at Americanindependent.com.
This is part of a shift in strategy, towards new forms of journalism made available as technology has advanced, and an increasing emphasis on national coverage and issue-based coverage from our network. Over the coming months, AINN will announce a number of new journalism initiatives that will continue to advance our mission of producing impact journalism in the public interest.
Going forward, an archive of the New Mexico Independent's reporting will exist on AmericanIndependent.com.
We are grateful for the loyal readership of the New Mexico Independent, and to the outstanding work of our reporters and editors.
We look forward to keeping you posted on our plans, which will be announced early next year.
Best regards,
David S. Bennahum
CEO & founder, The American Independent News Network
