Locals ring in '07 with resolve.
It's that time of year again.
The time when we jettison all of our 2006 baggage and prepare to greet the new year with a glassful of frothy champagne and a gutful of steely resolve. The slate is wiped clean as soon as the clock strikes midnight on Jan. 1, and 365 pristine days full of possibility stretch out before us.
We'll eat less. We'll exercise more. We will be kinder to animals and small children. We'll spend more time with family and less with the dancers at Cheeks. We will quit drinking, smoking and crushing mailboxes with baseball bats just for fun.
At least until Jan. 2.
But the point of a New Year's resolution is in the spirit, not the letter, of the law. They're not so much rules as they are guidelines. That said, here is what a handful of Santa Feans resolve to do in 2007:

"To clone myself so I can live a more balanced life with time for myself, my family, my friends, work and public service. To ensure that the International Conference on Creative Tourism and our civic center actually come to fruition. To learn to live by Maya Angelou's quote: 'I've learned that people will forget what you said. People will forget what you did. But people will never forget how you made them feel.'"
-Rebecca Wurzburger, Santa Fe city councilor (District 2).

"For the new year, I would like to see more positive movement in the resolution of the biggest social and economic issues of our times so that we can all take time to appreciate the rich cultural heritage that abounds in our state and our nation. Our cultural diversity and our ability to work together are our greatest assets."
-Stuart Ashman, cabinet secretary, New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs.

"I'm going to make more dough in 2007."
-Piper Kapin, co-owner of Backroad Pizza.

"Next year is our 15th anniversary year, so I would like to help more people than ever. As for our organization, I want us to build greener, healthier and more efficient next year."
-Sharon Welsh, executive director of the Santa Fe Community Housing Trust.

"My New Year's resolution is to make everyone in the city happy with every decision we make. [SFR: Sounds like there's a hint of sarcasm in that resolution]. Well, I'd like to be able to do that, but I'm not sure it can happen. So it's that and get more exercise."
-Frank Katz, Santa Fe city attorney.

"I want to give the young people of Santa Fe a voice. And part of that means helping to make Indie 101.5 the
biggest radio station in the state."
-Brian Hardgroove, Santa Fe resident, Public Enemy bassist and host of "Hardgroove's Fusebox" and the "Indie Lounge" on Indie 101.5 FM.

"To find an English word that rhymes with 'orange.'"
-Lisa Strout, director of the New Mexico Film Office.

"I resolve to defibrillate the music scene in Santa Fe, help give fresh new bands chances to play venues they normally couldn't and divulge hidden venues disguised as restaurants and cafés; 2007 will be a great year for music in our little town so long as we commit to making it so. Start your own band! Get your friends to bring their bands from out of town and, for heaven's sake, go out and support our local music scene. It's nothing without you."
-DJ Feathericci, Santa Fe spinster.

"No sugar and no white flours…says the lady eating a candy cane."
-Karmela Gonzales, United States Postal Service carrier.

"I'm going to continue to work on being a stronger person and to help make our community a safer place for everyone to live."
-Eric Johnson, Santa Fe Police chief.
