David (Jason Sudeikis) is a pot dealer. His entire rig is stolen as he and his doofus neighbor, Kenny (Will Poulter), try to stop Shaun White lookalikes from robbing Casey (Emma Roberts), a runaway.
David’s boss (Ed Helms) tells David he’ll forgive the loss if he goes to Mexico and picks up two tons of pot from a connection. He’ll even pay David $100,000. But how to pull it off?
Inspiration arrives as David sits on his stoop, worrying. An RV filled with Midwestern rubes pulls up, its inhabitants lost. A-ha! He’ll get Kenny and Casey to pose as his kids, rent an RV, and bring the pot up that way. And Rose (Jennifer Aniston), David’s neighbor and a stripper who just lost her job, comes along for a payday.
We’re the Millers has the kind of story that can be hammered out in about 15 minutes if its writers follow the “Save the Cat” formula. The central plot is dumb, and lots of moments are backward (like the movie’s treatment of Aniston’s character). But there are enough funny, even subversive, flourishes—this is a comedy in which the main characters are drug smugglers, after all—scattered throughout to bring it to life. Stay for the credits.
