$1 billion
That number represents Netflix's pledge for spending on film and television production in New Mexico for the next decade. The company's annual studio budget is a whopping $8 billion, which dwarfs all of Hollywood, and it's buying Albuquerque Studios. The state and city will kick in $14.5 million from economic development funds, in return for $1 billion in spending at the 28-acre studio lot (and on location in other spots in the state).
Raking it in
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Michelle Lujan Grisham raised more than $1.1 million in the past month, nearly tripling the total take by Republican Steve Pearce, who brought in $417,000. Pearce still has a sizeable stockpile, though, and expect TV commercial breaks to feature both candidates prominently ($) until Election Day. Today is the last day to register to vote for the upcoming election.
Pouring it on
Outside spending groups can legally pump as much money as they care to into the state's political contests. Because of recent court rulings, political committees don't have to disclose who's giving them the money to influence your vote. In New Mexico, groups both conservative and liberal are spending millions this election cycle. Dan Boyd looks at the numbers.
Guad help us
As SFR highlighted last month, these are tough times for Guadalupe Street merchants in Santa Fe. There's construction at the old Sanbusco Center, which reduces both parking options and foot traffic in the area. The Rail Runner shuttle bypasses the neighborhood almost completely for more far-flung destinations. A group of shop owners reached out to the city, which says it will work with them to brainstorm solutions that both the shops themselves and the government can try.
‘Grow up’
The family of Cameron Martinez, who was shot and killed while in a car in an Española parking lot, says his shooter, who police think may have mistakenly shot the recent high school graduate, needs to grow up. Police believe the shooting was gang-related and a case of mistaken identity.
Find that man
Santa Fe police think Christopher Taylor may have stolen $400,000 in jewelry from the trunk of his neighbors' car ($). His neighbors are Native artists Alvin Monte and Denna Platero. The theft happened last month.
They come to hear the Rooster
Imperial Rooster, to be precise. The Draft Punx series continues at Second Street's Rufina Taproom tonight at 8:30. The band is about as punk as country music gets, although a drunk George Jones riding a lawnmower to the liquor store seems to at least share punk roots. Just $5 gets you in for the fun.
Snow
You know it. YOU KNOW IT. The Sangres could get 2-5 inches tonight as temperatures plummet. Snowfall will be concentrated on the northern mountains. Highs will only be in the 50s in Santa Fe and low 60s in Albuquerque. Expect sun to return tomorrow and warmer temperatures by Thursday.
