Nuclear disarmament group Nukewatch New Mexico is holding a workshop tomorrow, Nov. 12, presenting an "Occupy"-influenced perspective on Los Alamos National Lab.---
The workshop will be held in the media room of Warehouse 21 from 1 to 3.
Nukewatch will make a presentation to be followed by a Q and A and brainstorming session. One topic they'll address is LANL's planned plutonium pit production facility, the Chemistry and Metallurgy Research Replacement facility. Construction of that estimated $5.8 billion project could begin in 2012 or earlier, but there won't be any permanent new jobs associated with it, Nukewatch executive director Jay Coghlan notes.
"Los Alamos County is the one percent, with most millionaires per capita & the lowest unemployment rate, all propped up by WMD programs (in contrast, New Mexico is 43rd in per capita income)," Coghlan writes in a posting on the Occupy Santa Fe Facebook page.
The posting also points to lack of cleanup funding in the Department of Energy budget recommended by the Senate Committee on Appropriations. Since Congress hasn't agreed on a budget yet, the figures for both cleanup and CMRR construction are still tentative.
