Santa Fe police late Friday announced that a woman has been charged in the case involving the destruction of the Plaza obelisk on Oct. 12—the third person this week.
Dawn Furlong, 46, a local tattoo artist known more commonly with the last name Purnell, is charged with two felonies and three misdemeanors: criminal damage to property (over $1000), conspiracy, unlawful assembly, criminal trespass and unauthorized graffiti ($1000 or less).
Furlong did not respond to a call from SFR on Friday night.
Deputy Police Chief Ben Valdez announced that the department had cooperated with the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office, New Mexico State Police and the District Attorney's Office to file the charges.
Jail records don't indicate that Furlong was booked into the Santa Fe County jail, in fact, an employee at Dawn's Custom Tattoo told SFR she was working on a client Friday night.
During a Thursday meeting of the city's Public Safety Committee, SFPD Chief Andrew Padilla had asserted that more charges were coming in the case of the destroyed obelisk.
Ryan Witt and Lily Schweitzer, the first two to be charged in the case on Wednesday evening, also do not appear in the jail's booking system.
SFPD did not respond to questions from SFR about why three of the five people facing charges in the case had not been arrested, while two others had. And the department also was silent Friday evening about a flock of 10 police vehicles spread out along the Plaza around 6 pm.
Dozens of protesters participated in pulling down the monument on Oct. 12, and police had said they would use video surveillance and body camera footage, as well as tips from the community, to track down those who had active roles.
An anonymous tip led law enforcement to a car registered to Schweitzer in the driveway of a Santa Fe address, according to a criminal complaint filed in Santa Fe County Magistrate Court. But it does not appear to have led to any arrests.
SFPD arrested Sean Sunderland, 24, and Dylan Wrobel, 27, the day of the Indigenous Peoples Day event for their alleged involvement in the incidents leading up to the takedown of the obelisk, including a tussle with officers. Both were jailed and released on bond.
