Rallying the faithful
Vice President Mike Pence flew to Roswell Friday to headline an event for Steve Pearce and Yvette Herrell ($). Pearce is running for governor and Herrell is locked in a neck-and-neck race with Xochitl Torres Small to replace him in Congress. Pence told the crowd to make sure the much talked about blue wave of Democrats "hits a red wall."
Money vote
Meanwhile, the latest federal campaign finance reports show Torres Small leaving Herrell in the distance. With more than $800,000 raised in October's first two weeks, she's gathered in more than five times as much as Yvette Herrell, who took in $148,000. Torres Small has more than $1 million on hand as Democrats try to flip the traditionally Republican seat.
Dismissed again
After reviewing filings by the district attorney in Doña Ana County, Las Cruces Judge Conrad Perea has dismissed voluntary manslaughter charges against Tai Chan. It's the fourth time ($) prosecutors have tried to convict the former Santa Fe County Sheriff's Deputy of killing his partner, Jeremy Martin. Judge Perea tossed the case of his own accord, without a defense motion. Prosecutors say they'll ask the judge to reconsider.
Everywhere signs
There are signs of intrigue in the race for state House District 22, where Greg Schmedes says his opponent's husband is taking down his campaign signs. But Jessica Velasquez says her husband was asked to take them down by a land grant in the East Mountains where the signs are posted, because Schmedes doesn't have permission. Schmedes set up a camera to spot Velasquez' husband.
Get out
Summer is past, but the joy of a road trip remains like those last few green leaves clinging to their warm-weather color. In the latest edition of SFR's Mother Tongue, Lauren Whitehurst sings the praises of hitting the road and getting outside with family.
Long wait
It can take two years or more for naturalization applications to be processed, a delay for US citizenship that is abnormally long. The Associated Press found the average wait for a naturalization application is 10 months, but in Atlanta and Texas, it can take years. While waits for asylum claims or deportation can be lengthy, the AP says citizenship applications usually don't take so long.
We know it’s you
Police say an Albuquerque couple used a fake credit card to buy more than a thousand dollars' worth of Halloween costumes, but were caught when they came back to the same store and tried to do it again. They didn't use disguises.
Enjoy it
Today's the last day of unseasonably warm temperatures before another cold front hits. Expect sunshine and highs around 70 in the middle Rio Grande Valley, with even warmer numbers further south. The storm could bring several inches of snow to many parts of Northern New Mexico, with a foot or more expected in the Sangre de Cristos.
