Good news for Santa Feans who think they know how to art good: The city announced last week it is actively seeking candidates for the Santa Fe Arts Commission. Applicants must live in Santa Fe county and be engaged in the arts world (or worlds). Those chosen are appointed to two-year terms by mayor Javier Gonzales.
What does an arts commissioner do, you ask? Well, the idea is that fine and performance arts (and all those fun little niches in between) are important to the whole Santa Fe gestalt—vital, even. Appointees would do things like assess local arts issues and propose and/or enact policies that would benefit these areas. Additionally, they'd have a say in the allocation of the Santa Fe Lodgers' Tax for the Arts, a fund that helps out nonprofit art organizations, one-off events and so forth.
Further, potential commissioners would contribute to the recently created Culture Connects: Santa Fe initiative, which aims to unify the city through arts and strategic partnerships within the community, have a hand in running the Community Gallery inside the Santa Fe Community Convention Center and implement ideas into the Art in Public Places program.
Interested parties must apply with a cover letter and resume by Aug. 31 at 5 pm, and can either email degarcia@santafenm.gov or drop physical materials at the Community Gallery at 201 W Marcy St. More information is available
