Internationally recognized arts museum SITE Santa Fe announced today that Louis Grachos will take over as Phillips executive director. The role was previously known as Phillips director and chief curator, a position filled by Irene Hofmann, who stepped down in December after roughly seven years with the institution. And though Grachos will have a hand in the curatorial future of the museum, his specific duties will be slightly different than Hoffman's and more clearly defined over time.
Grachos leaves the executive director position the Palm Springs Art Museum to relocate to Santa Fe, though he is no SITE newcomer. According to a press release from the organization, Grachos served as its director from 1996 to 2003. He'll start in earnest sometime this summer.
"To return to SITE Santa Fe now is such an incredible opportunity and point of excitement for me," Grachos says in the announcement. "I am so looking forward to working collaboratively with the SITE Santa Fe team to create new opportunities for artists as well as new and exciting ways for the public to connect with bold and ambitious art."
SITE hit its 25th anniversary just last year and is currently smack-dab in the middle of its SITElab14 exhibit, a survey of works by May Stevens, who called Santa Fe home from 1997 until her death in 2019, dubbed Mysteries, Politics and Seas of Words. In April, Los Angeles-based painter Mary Weatherford will be featured in Canyon-Daisy-Eden, which runs until September. You can pretty much expect new things popping up at the museum from now until forever.
