How to Conceal Your Weapon
If amorous Spring prompts you to make like Mae West and ask, "Is that a gun in his pocket…?", here are a few guidelines that will help you arm yourself with more than information. First, if the object of your inspection is under 25, the bulge in question better be a function of virility. All persons under 25 years old are required to carry

their weapons out in the open in New Mexico, like in a hip holster or maybe strapped to their heads. After the quarter-century mark, anyone is free to apply to one of the Department of Public Safety's certified Concealed Carry Permit programs, which run about 15 hours and combine classroom talk with time at the firing range. Concealing a whole arsenal requires qualifying for each weapon individually. But remember, the fun stops short of schools, federal and State buildings, saloons and any other licensed liquor establishment. Don't worry, though, you can still joyride in a romantic state of secrecy. With a permit, concealed weapons are allowed in your vehicle (including bicycles), so just keep that Glock strapped to your handlebars when you dismount for a few tequila shots.
Do it yourself:
Let the folks at Tina's Range Gear (509 Airport Road, 471-4411) or The Outdoorsman (530 N. Guadalupe St., 983-3432) hook you up with a certified instructor, but always be sure to double check them with the Department of Public Safety's listing at
or give them a call at 505-841-8053. It's also helpful if you have a certified original birth certificate, $100, a New Mexico driver's license, have not been convicted of any felonies, violent crimes (including domestic abuse) and have no history of drug abuse.
