Governor Bill Richardson Creates Advisory Team to Help New Mexico Communities Access Recovery Act Grant Funds
Governor directs state to “leave no stone unturned” in efforts to maximize federal funding
SANTE FE----Governor Bill Richardson has signed an Executive Order creating the Competitive Grant Advisory Team to assist local communities throughout New Mexico compete for federal grant funding that is available through the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act.
“Most of the formula recovery funds are designated for specific, existing programs with very little local discretion. The competitive grant process is the best way for many New Mexico communities, especially rural areas, to access funding for qualified projects that will create jobs and boost the economy,” said Governor Richardson. “The advisory team is a group of talented, respected individuals who will work closely with their communities to help them navigate the grant process. The team will be an important part of the Office of Recovery and Reinvestment, which I created to make sure that we leave no stone unturned and New Mexico receives all the funding possible.”
The Competitive Grant Advisory Team is chaired by Rick Homans, Secretary of the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department, and is comprised of New Mexicans from around the state representing a wide variety of professions and interests. The group will meet with local communities to inform them about competitive grant opportunities under the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act and to encourage and empower those communities to apply. The group will also be charged with seeking local partners in state applications for clean energy grids, broadband and health information technology funding. The meetings will be open to the public, and a tentative schedule is below. A more detailed schedule will be announced in the coming days.
The Governor's Executive Order also officially establishes the New Mexico Office of Recovery and Reinvestment, which the Governor announced in March. The Office is headed by former New Mexico Governor Toney Anaya and is charged with ensuring that stimulus funds spur economic activity, create and retain jobs, and promote long-term economic prosperity.
“We are working with state agencies to make sure they comply with the strict eligibility and reporting requirements for recovery funding, and to support inter-agency communication and coordination,” said former Governor Anaya. “Under Governor Richardson's direction, New Mexico is well prepared and in some cases is among the first states in the country to apply and qualify for federal recovery act funding.”
The committee will hold an initial organizational meeting Friday, April 24, 2009, at 1:30 p.m. at the International Folk Museum on Museum Hill in Santa Fe.
