Ask a local about their Santa Fe dream breakfast, and they're bound to rattle off a few restaurants—but someplace near the top, you'll hear about Tia Sophia's.
Since 1975, the downtown institution has proved a vital mainstay of local culinary culture with its stellar green chile and unforgettable breakfast burritos. But Tia Sophia's and indeed the Santa Fe restaurant community itself was rocked last Thursday July 18 when founder and owner James Maryol passed away suddenly at home. He was 76.
The son of Greek immigrants, Maryol was born in Albuquerque. He is survived by his wife Ann, who helped start the restaurant, sons Nicholas, now a co-owner, and Alex, the longtime popular blues musician, among various other siblings.
Tia's will be closed Thursday July 25 for Maryol's funeral service, scheduled for noon at Eldorado's St. Elias Greek Orthodox Church, with burial at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe thereafter.
