This weekend, the Spanish Colonial Arts Society brings over 80 Hispanic artists to Santa Fe for the 22nd annual Winter Spanish Market. SFR sat down with last year's "Best of Show" winner, Julia Gomez, for a demonstration of her traditional Colcha art.---
Colcha is traditional form of Mexican embroidery characterized by hand-spun, natural-dyed wool on cotton or wool fabric. Gomez, still humbled by her win at last year's show, describes the detail that goes into the artwork.
"All of the materials are local. The wool comes from a herd of sheep that live at Camino de los Golondrinas. All of the yarn is dyed here in New Mexico from natural sources. The purple comes from the prickly pear. The red from a local insect," Gomez says.
