WINNERS
Gender Offenders
When local philanthropists consider which good cause they'll support, crossdressing kings and queens may not typically come to mind. That could change on May 10 when Santa Fe's Gender Offenders shows its home movies at the Railyard District's newest gay/lesbian café, Max's. Dubbed "Sinematic," the evening includes video highlights of the crossdressing performance artists' past two years of performances. The show will help finance the Gender Offenders' trip to the Freakshow A-Go-Go in Portland, Ore.
The Health Food Dating Scene
Surf the Santa Fe personals on Craigslist, and you're bound to notice a trend: Lots of folks are searching for someone at health-food stores. One poster, addressing "Cindy at Wild Oats," identifies himself as "the guy who can't take his eyes off you." Another, under the headline, "Chocolate Truffles & Smoked Oysters," is looking for someone-gender unknown-wearing navy and white stripes at Trader Joe's. Finally, there are two guys named "Jim," one who "did not want to feel foolish" by approaching a slender female in jeans at the La Montañita Co-op, and another 53-year-old who thinks he spotted an old friend named "Lisa," also at Wild Oats.
Girls Inc. of Santa Fe***image1***
May 7 is the National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, and Girls Inc. of Santa Fe-an affiliate of the national Girls Incorporated-is getting involved. Through a partnership with The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, Girls Inc. of Santa Fe encourages teens to take an online quiz (
) as part of an awareness campaign. New Mexico, unfortunately, has the second-highest teen birthrate in the nation, so awareness counts for a whole lot.
LOSERS
The Lord Our Righteousness Church
Last week, New Mexico state police removed three children from The Lord Our Righteousness Church, just north of Clayton, NM. Its leader (and self-confessed son of God) Wayne Bent has been accused of inappropriate contact with minors. While he denies any pedophilic activity, he admits to "lying naked" with his virgin followers. According to Bent, God told the girl to get in his bed. Knowing most folks would condemn such actions, Bent addresses this zinger to America in his April 27 blog post (see
): "You are the feces of serpents and you dare to say to us that you smell good."
James McDow
Girl walks into Santa Fe Community College bathroom. Girl uses bathroom. Girl hears clicking sound and sees someone with a cellphone camera videotaping her in the bathroom. The result? One 18-year-old student traumatized and one 45-year-old Pecos resident, James McDow, behind bars for voyeurism. McDow denies taking the photos but admitted to cracking open a Budweiser and hanging out in the women's restroom…OK, that explains everything-not.
Joseph Romero
Being a guard at the San Miguel County jail probably isn't the most lucrative gig. Perhaps that's why (now former) jail guard Joseph Romero let two inmates have sex in exchange for $100 last November in the Las Vegas, NM, lockup. He pleaded guilty to the charge recently. This may be the only time that the words "sex for $100" and "Las Vegas" ever appear in print without referring to a certain Nevada megalopolis.
