Three days and many ways to say, "Thanks Mom."
Picking socks off the floor is a monumental task at 12 years old. Sure, they stink, but they don't seem to be hurting anybody just lying there in the middle of the room. Messes, for reasons beyond the young mind, seem to be the focal point of a mother's nagging. For a kid, these strange creatures get horribly worked up over minor transgressions, remain calm and cool during moments of spilled blood and yell embarrassing things at sporting events. As a kid grows up, that woman they once couldn't stand being away from becomes the most agitating person in the world before suddenly it all clicks. She cried all those times because of her pride in her children and frustration that hers weren't the perfect beings she was trying to raise.
The idea to celebrate mothers with their own holiday came about, not as a repentance for the bad behavior that children are prone to, but as a celebration of their pacifism. Mother's Day itself was the first Mother's Day present. Anna Jarvis and her West Virginia town honored Anna's mother for her work to reconcile opposed neighbors after the Civil War. By 1914, the holiday had caught on and was declared a national event.
Whether your mother ranks up there with Mother Theresa or is a touch more Joan Crawford, the lady gave you life, and didn't take it away like she probably threatened to a time or two, so if she's a passionate gardener or a fan of fine art, there are plenty of ways to honor her for being the best mom she knew how to be.
