With a strong commitment to locally penned works in 2018, the Santa Fe Playhouse reaches out to local playwrights for new and original works for its lauded annual events: Benchwarmers (10-minute plays based around a park bench), Son of Benchwarmers (the same, but especially for student writers) and The Different Festival, which features multiple staged readings from Sept. 27-Oct. 21.

The submission period comes in the midst of a particularly prolific few months for Santa Fe playwrights. Maven Talia Pura is always at it, of course; in addition to being a playwright herself, she hosted the Women's Voices Theater Festival in January of this year, and next week she opens the one-woman show The Passion of Ethel Rosenberg (which she actually did not write—a rarity for her. This weekend and next, local playwright and Santa Fe theater reviewer at TalkingBroadway.com, Mark Dunn, sees his original show Glitter Girls staged at the East Mountain Centre for Theatre (get your tickets here). Moving into May, playwright Marguerite Louise Scott's show, Flight Plan, will go up at the Santa Fe Playhouse (May 10-20; tickets here).
So, long story short, you may have some competition—but all the more reason to get your ducks in order and leap into the fray. Sharpen those pencils, re-ribbon your typewriter, boot up the computer … Do what you gotta do. Just write it.
